Choosing Piano as Your Musical Instrument of Choice by Jackie Clark

Choosing a musical instrument to learn to play requires a number of points to be considered before a decision can be made.
Physical size is an obvious consideration as is cost and the type of music wanting to be played. Shortness of breath would preclude learning a brass or woodwind instrument. Physical disabilities would also limit the available suitable instrument choices.

In considering the piano, a number of favorable reasons would make it a good choice of instrument to choose.

Here are six reasons to consider, that make the piano stand out from the crowd, and four that make it a poor choice.

1 the piano has a wider range of octaves to play than almost any other instrument. This allows a wide range of moods to be played, even simultaneously by each hand.

2 almost no other instrument allows two different parts to be played at the same time. Instruments such as the guitar can play bass notes and the melody simultaneously,. The piano can play two melodies together although the left hand melody is usually the bass notes.

3 piano notes can be sustained or chopped. More modern pianos can sustain individual notes rather than all notes. Few instruments have this ability.

4 most instruments need backing musicians to provide a full sound. The piano can be played alone and sound complete. Other instruments are not required as the piano can have full bass accompaniment as well as the melody being played.

5 the piano is used as a major instrument in all forms of music from formal classical to rock, blues, and fun music. The piano is widely used to accompany all types of congregational singing.

6 being so versatile the piano is the first choice of mood setting in many circumstances. Silent films usually employed the services of a pianist to set the scene as the film progressed. Even today films use the piano for setting scenes.

The piano, however, does have a few disadvantages as a choice of instrument:

1 the instrument occupies a large space, even more space is required for the pianist to play the instrument.

2 the piano is an expensive instrument to purchase.

3 the piano is a loud instrument.
This can be a problem in crowded housing areas. Neighbor annoyance can be a problem, especially when learning to play piano. Electronic pianos can be played using earphones, eliminating the noise problems associated with acoustic pianos.

4 tuning will be required from time to time, which requires the services of an expert piano tuner to carry out the work. Other stringed instruments are tuned by the musician.

With the above in mind your choice of piano as a musical instrument to learn to play should be more focused.
